The Vision of Women in Trades is Changing

It’s been a long time coming but with an exciting announcement and the start of a New Year, I decided now was the time to begin my blog!

I have noticed in the past few months, more than ever, female tradies are getting more attention and for all the right reasons! Hooray! (It’s been a long time coming!)

In 2017 I received record numbers of calls and emails from females looking to do work experience in the electrical field, particularly regarding temporary power and generators, I love it when we get approached for this and can give them the experience, covering such a wide variety of electrical works within my business including domestic, commercial, industrial, maintenance, temporary power for planned and emergency power outages, generator hire, generator servicing and maintenance, meant they were able to experience more than one sector of the trade.

One young lady still at school that wanted to get some experience in the trade came along with us for a couple of weeks and I took my hat of to her, it was the middle of winter and we were working in a 150m trench installing consumer mains, it was hammering down, everyone was soaked head to toe and covered in mud… she didn’t bat an eyelid, got stuck in and enjoyed herself!

I recently read an article at True Local, it states some interesting facts and figures around Lady Tradies and demolishing the gender walls, have a read and let me know what you think:

The article makes some great points and there are now many websites and organisations that are helping Woman in trades and encouraging females into the trade. If you’re looking for more ‘Lady Tradies’ here’s a few options to find them:

And were definitely not man haters here at GEM (my other half is also an electrician for GEM) but we do LOVE to see ladies getting into the trades and appreciate some customers would prefer a female in their property or place of work … rumour has it we tidy up after ourselves 😉

Which leads me nicely onto our SUPER exciting news…. ready……..

WERE TAKING ON AN APPRENTICE…. And it is an incredible young woman, namely Jay, all of us at GEM are so excited about her future within GEM and know she will grow into a ‘bright spark’ and be an asset to GEM.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I am going to start regular blogs including photos, videos, reviews, advice and the like. An easy and effective way to keep you all informed with what’s new and happening, I’ll be posting videos of how to carry out some basic safety checks around the home to ensure the safety of you and your family. And more light-hearted blogs to give you a little insider on GEM, the female owned and operated business.

Myself and the team at GEM wish everyone a healthy and prosperous 2018!

Take Care, Mel
